Universal has released details of the new versions of Tubular Bells due for release on June 8th on the Mercury label.
It will be available in four different physical versions and two different digital download versions, including:
- A 2 CD compilation, with a new stereo remix of Tubular Bells, plus a hits collection, aimed at introducing new listeners to Mike's music.
- A deluxe edition, with 2 CDs and a DVD, featuring the stereo remix, the original mix, a new 5.1 remix and video of the BBC Second House performance of Tubular Bells Part One.
- A vinyl release of the original mix.
- An ultimate edition, including the new stereo remix, Mike Oldfield's Single, the original mix, the vinyl edition, the 5.1 remix, a 5.1 remix of Mike Oldfield's Single, the video of the Second House performance, the 1971 demos and a never heard before scrapped first mix of Tubular Bells from Spring 1973.
If that wasn't already enough, the ultimate edition will also include a 60 page hardback book, plectrums, a poster, a facsimile of the Manor Studios brochure, a facsimile concert ticket, a postcard and recording information.
This will be a limited edition of 500, each one signed and numbered by Mike Oldfield, available from mikeoldfield.com, which is due to be relaunched next week.
Mercury/Universal will be promoting the release with a special event on June 6th at 6pm, where bells will be rung in locations throughout the world, footage of which will then be available on mikeoldfield.com

"Oh look, it's Tubular Bells classique!".
This was probably the first thought that entered my mind when I heared the new album "Music of the Spheres". But it kind-a grows on you. It's certainly, as some people described in our guestbook, a refreshing sound from the more artificial sounds Mike delivered lately. Don't take us wrong - even Light and Shade had some excellent tunes! And although I think there are instances in this musical adventure that I thought to myself "why the heck did you stop playing????", I will be first in line to buy it.

It has surely been a time of big changes and realisations these last few months, not least of which has been the writing of my Autobiography. This is nearing completion with the help of my co writer Jon Collins and hopefully will be published this year if not early next. During the process of bringing this book to life I have realised a great many things about myself and my position in the scheme of things.( Oh for the gift of hindsight ! ) This will surely influence my future personally and creatively.

Release date: 13 March 2006
With a career span of over 30 years Mike Oldfield is truly part of rock music royalty. From his ground breaking introduction with 'Tubular Bells' to his hit singles such as 'Moonlight Shadow' and 'In Dulci Jubilo' his music has spanned a generation and with this 3 CD set, a career of essential music is all brought together for the first time.
This fantastic collection separates Mike's career into 3 distinct sections.
Disc 1 covers the early part of Mike's career, a period when Mike released the aforementioned 'Tubular Bells' along with the chart successes 'In Dulci Jubilo' and 'Portsmouth'. Also included on Disc 1 are excerpts from hit albums such as 'Hergest Ridge', 'Ommadawn' and 'Incantations'.

Now we have the album for ourselves, we can give you our humble opinion of it. This is more difficult then it would seem since 'we' (there are two webmasters of this website in case you did not know) both like Mike Oldfield's music, but have some different tastes concerning trance and dance... But here goes.
Light
1. Angelique
Very good, nice use of Hi-hats, good Guitar work, good musical depth.
2. Blackbird
Late night drive kind-a feel to it. Simplistic, but elegant. A nice deep sound.
3. The Gate
Roland W-30 in a new light. Funny, but somehow a lesser musical feel to it. First thing that pops in mind is "Listen to my great new toy" I used to do myself. :-) Clean acoustic guitar work in the second part of the song.
4. First Steps
I really like Tres Lunas, so also this track! I am very happy it's on the CD. Parts of this musical piece were also featured on a fan mix of the Tres Lunas game music. Very good guitar work, sweeping passages, what's not to like???!??
5. Closer
A little Tubular Bells II-like (did remind me of Tattoo) and a little "Silent Night" which was released on the Tattoo CD-single. Just nice electric guitars playing on a Bass Guitar oh and yes: we're all gonna drown. :-)
6. Our Father
The main theme is constant, but in the background the music changes quite often. At first glance the piece might seem boring, but if you take the time to listen to it, it's quite nice.
7. Rocky
Kind-a sleep well, all's well feel to it. More of a lullaby.
8. Sunset
After listening to Rocky, Sunset really makes you feel that the kids are in bed and you stare into the sunset with a nice glass of your favourite drink. A good tune, very well chosen to end the first CD.
Shade (Me personally hate dance/trance, etc. so here's someone else's thoughts)
1. Quicksilver
OK, short version - it's not very likely that you will find it in the local disco. It's not just that good. It would have been better with normal drums - a normal track.
2. Resolution
OK, we are discussing on how to classify this one among ourselfs. Power drums - letting me think of "The City" from Vangelis. Not particulairy good, not very bad.
3. Slipstream
Damn, my trance track won't start.... Need some batteries. :-) It 'runs' nicely, the synth voices used are good.
4. Surfing
Simplistic, but very old style technical (vocoder?). I like this track. Not outstanding, but nice to listen to, ending in heavy guitar.
5. Tears Of An Angel
After a shaky "Millennium Bell"-like start, the track changes direction into a very different style of music, taking you through a range of voices and electric guitars. Nice.
6. Romance
A well known tune in a dance/trance mix. I like it, but I am not hampered by what people feel is "good trance". I will play this track in my car, that's for sure.
7. Ringscape
Another Tres Lunas track I missed on the original album. I can still listen to this music. A little old style rock, complete with Hammond organ.
8. Nightshade
A conflict between bass melody and accompany music. The bells remind me of Islands part two. Not bad, not a favourite either. The voice calling "Nightshade" is something to be left out, it does not fit. Too many tracks feature this already. In contrast of the first CD not a very good track to end the album.
What do we think of the album overall.... Keeping in mind it's a LOT of music, I feel there is enough to please many and enough other stuff to hate it. I will personally play the second CD WAY less then the first , which I feel is brilliant. The second is OK. I think most people will like a total of 1 CD, finding the rest crap. But that leaves you still with one CD.

Mike Oldfield has updated his website with some info on Light and Shade and a contest for who will be the millionth visitor (create a screenshot with the counter on exactly 1.000.000). One or two problems though - the counter reached over a million already and the programmer of the counter did not factor in that people can his reload 100s of times. Also the counter falls off the screen so if you'd read the message on Mike's website and went back to the splash screen, you'd raise the counter again.... Need any good web programmers, Mike?

The first Album which I am just putting the final touches to is a double Album for release around September 2005. The first Disk is made up of atmospheric "Ambient" or "Chillout" pieces. The second Disk is of more up-tempo tracks some of which are in the darker moodier vein. There are 18 tracks in all and they were created using my new virtual software studio mostly with lead melodies using all the different Guitars and "Grand Piano". The vocals were made using a new generation of software virtual vocalists. Untitled as yet but maybe called "Quicksilver". Whadayathink?

NLStore, a dutch internet shop, is offering the possibility of ordering a new DVD with the title: 'Live in Montreux 1981', to be available after May 16. The tracklist COULD be 1: Tauras, 2: Sheba, 3: Mirage, 4: Platinum, 5: Tublar Bells part 2, 6: Conflict, 7: Ommadawn part 1, 8: Punkadiddle.

Our game specialist Marco has written a review about Maestro after a day online gaming. Mike himself was also online which added to the fun and we can now tell you that more Music-VR parts will be released only if the game catches on. According to Mike it takes quite some time to create something like Maestro.
It took some time, but Maestro is now available.
The official release date is still April 12, but you can download
the game and it can be bought from within the game itself (not via the website www.mikeoldfield.com though).
The game itself looks nice. No outstanding graphics, but it is
pleasant to look at. The game is much more complex than Tres Lunas, much larger and more puzzles and possibilities. The new chat function works perfectly. With Tres Lunas, you needed to switch back and forth. In Maestro you can chat within the game.
Simply put the object of the game is to put 4 objects on the right spot and with that become the Maestro of the game. This would give you a nice piece of music to listen to, according to Mike himself who's also playing online sometimes and answering questions about this game.
Something I would like to add though is that there is not that much music in the game during game play. Most of the time it's fairly quiet, which is a little disappointing for a musical game.
Also the price is somewhat high: 22 euro, but if you are willing to pay that amount for it, I think you can have fun with it for some time to come. |

We have some good news and some bad news. Bad news first: the DVD-audio of Tubular Bells 2003 has been delayed until october 17. The good news: The box containing the DVD-audio, TB II/III and the Art in Heaven concert will be released in the Benelux and is planned for late november. There is an image of the box on www.oldfield.de.
Update: The DVD-Audio will also include excerpts from the original demo tapes! (thanks Alex).

| According to an article in High Fidelity Review, Warner Music Group will indeed be making available a high-resolution DVD-Audio version, containing surround mixes of all seventeen tracks. Label representatives told High Fidelity Review that they were hoping for a release date sometime in late July, although that is subject to change. Marcus Junglas wrote his review about Tubular Bells 2003 in the Amarok Daily newsletter.
Well, I bet this record will divorce the fan base into two parts as it already did. The one part who are happy with a more "modern" sounding version of the masterpiece and the others who are afraid that a rerecording won't do TB any good and might destroy the rawness of the original. Both parties will find their opinion confirmed somehow.
Concerning the MP3 bits being present on Mikes web pages (which ARE from the final mix) one might get the idea that Mike used too much electronic and digital gimmics (midi basses), but IMO it sounds quite hand made in general. Not too much Midi-stuff really. Wether or not Mike used a sequencer for the intro and other repeated parts is unknown. Maybe he did. On the other hand TB2003 did not became as clean and polished as I expected. The overall quality in sound and playing increased a lot, but it didn't become an inhuman, computer-corrected emotionless thing. My persional favorite is not part 1 (never was), it's part 2 and for me it's positive that in some bits the guitars are not exactly in time. So it sounds human again.
I also was afraid that Mike might have cleaned it up from "unneeded" bits and instruments, make it more easy and clean. IMO he did not. There are differences in the mix here and there, but you still are able to "dig into the sound" and find instruments and patterns as in the original.
The other side of all that:
The agressive raw-ness seems to be lost. The whole thing sounds a bit more relaxed, but without that slightly angry, agressive emotions of a 19 year old Mike. The guitars are held more polite, the destorion isn't that hard in the agressive bits, the "bagpipe" guitars sound less as real Bagpipes that the original ones did and in some bits he replaced a western guitar with an concert guitar to leave it smooth.
I wouldn't say it became as clean as TB2, just the hardest effects were reduced. While the instruments seem to haven't changed in general a modern synth was used to "fill the floor", to create room. It didn't became a synthesizer version! Even the stereo mix has room and sounds modern 3-dimensional. I'm waiting for the 5.1 mix!
As an Oldfield fan there are severall key sections...
The "Master of Ceremonies" is John Cleese. He tried to make it funny and who knows him and imagines his face will laugh here and there. This is new! The original Viv Stanshall type of announcements was a royal one - okay, which is funny again.
Main negative point: the "Reed and Pipe organ" really sounds like a cheap SB16 FM-synth. Why Mike!?
"The Bell" (as I still call it) ends with drums! Good luck he kept it in a good distance in the mix, but supporting the final climax, which is not during the Tubular Bells but after them. This is a similar layout as in TB2's The Bell.
You might know the stories about the problem with the Bell sound. In the end it didn't sound like a real bell as Mike smashed it. Here it sound like a bell but as we got used to a loud "BANG!" start some might be unhappy.
As I mentionned above the "Bagpipe Guitars" destortion have less treble, sound more calm. Together with a acoustic guitar it develops more into the "Mike Oldfield single" mood than to the album version.
The "Caveman"... he cries... he still can. ;-) In the original recording he speed up the tape to make his roaring sound
deeper later. He did similar effects to again and so sounds like back then, but not only. There are several voices this time, even a HIGHER voice which makes me laugh. All of the end in the chaotic roaring we know.
The following silent organ+guitar bit is one of my favorites of TB and I was afraid that he replaced the organ, might used a string section or whatever and so turned it into a kitschy ending. Now I'm quite happy with it. There is still the organ, but with help of a modern synth floor. The guitars are played as on Boxed, which means that he also recorded the guitar which is missing on the first mix (it was forgotten).
As we could imagine the "Sailors Hornpipe" is the normal studio version and no drunken stumble around his house. IMO this is good as it would sound as artificial theater today. SH itself gained more dynamics, a stumping bass and in the end even an electric guitar... quite nice.
Conclusion:
When I got the recording I was quite neutral to it. Some bits lost some soul and intention with its rawness, other bits improved and make me listen to over and over again (Pt.1 2nd climax in "Latin" or the bunch of mandolins in "Harmonics"). Today I begin to like it. IMO it lost less than it gained.
Of course I understand that "this is not the orginal Tubular Bells!" arguments which will come up. Actually it is not. It is no 1:1 rerecording, but also it isn't no synthetic, perfect, cleaned up version known from so many "Happy Electron Band plays Tubular Bells".
As I say, would that version have been produced in a big orchester/group live on stage we all would run around as happy as we could be. As a studio record it will rain critics.
It's just the way you are listening to it. Don't take it as a replacement, take it as a new version. I'll listen to it again. I start to like it. |

Tubular Bells 2003 Introduction (Radio edit) review by oldfield.nl.
As soon as it arrived I loaded it up since I was very interested in hearing this version. I must say that it is a refreshing sound. Electronic, but very catching and clean with excellent drum sound to complete it all. I can only imagine that people would expect more guitars but this is the radio edit and targeted at the general public. What stood out was the fact that the well-known Tubular Bells loop follows the music in pitch, which makes it more blend in. Hopefully it will be released in The Benelux (if not, we will let you know).

THE RE RECORDING
The Stereo and the 5.1 mixes of Tubular Bells are finished and we are looking for a Venue for the launch and 5.1 premier event. Meanwhile I have been working on The Tube World.
THE TUBE WORLD
The Tube World will be quite different to Tres Lunas in that the landscapes are much bigger and the focus is more on the feel of the visuals and the music. Less focus is on the gameplay although some of the levels will need a fair degree of skill to get through. Much more like a flight simulator! Because of the complexity of the graphics we recomend GeForce 2 or better graphics cards.
The Album will be called Tubular Bells, It will have new artwork (the same but clearer and calmer than the wonderful original). The CD version will include a free DVD featuring excerpts of the 5.1 mix, a video of the single, and all the information , pics, etc. The 5.1 will be available as a separate Super Audio DVD. The release will be on MAY 26th 2003, with The Tube World also available around this time. The Tube World will be downloadable from this website, and also mail order.
Off for a mini holiday now!!

There is a new message on Mike's website (that we totally missed) about the re-recording of Tubular Bells and the Tubular World MVR!
The Rerecording of Tubular Bells is nearly finished and I am having a great time, as it really is a wonderful piece of music. The new technologies help a lot although I am mainly keeping to the original instrumentation (hand played guitars and keyboards).
I am deliberately not hurrying as I only have one chance to do it as perfectly as possible. I am not working too hard and divide my time between music and my new hobby of Radio Controlled Electric Model Helicopters.
I am saving the caveman vocal until last because I know that I won't be able to speak for two weeks after that! I have also started work on the Tubular World MVR.

The city council is negotiating with music promoters to have Neil Young, Tom Jones and Mike Oldfield play in Bilbao next year. Oldfield rings the changes
After 30 years, the pop innovator still loves playing games with the musical landscape. He gave Justin Stoneman a sneak preview.
Mike Oldfield may still be living off the fame of his now 30-year-old cult album Tubular Bells in the UK, but abroad he is a huge, cutting edge star. When I told a Spanish taxi driver at Valencia airport that I was on my way to meet Mr Oldfield, he became so excited that he inadvertently mounted the kerb and nearly took both our lives.
Spain, and most of the rest of Europe, embraces Oldfield as a creative genius. As we enter the hotel in which he is staying, crowds jostle for his autograph. Now the man who helped to launch Virgin Records and make Richard Branson's fortune with 20 million copies of Tubular Bells may be about to transform the music industry again.
His Tres Lunas project, on which he has spent four years, is a revolutionary mix of music and computer game. While games usually depend on a sport, puzzle or combat, the eco-friendly and non-combative Tres Lunas puts music centre stage. You travel from deserts to lush greenery and an erupting volcano, trying to collect seven gold rings, while birds fly in time to the drumbeat. Latin-influenced, chill-out dance music changes according to the landscape, as if you are creating your own surreal soundtrack for each part of the game.
Oldfield gives a radiant smile. "I'm 49, I've made more than 20 albums and I'm about to release something I feel is fresh and challenging. It's great still feeling so creative and hungry."
In 1972, an unknown 19-year-old with straggly hair and a tape displayed those same qualities to Richard Branson. A fledgling operator in the music industry, Branson took a bold risk in using Oldfield's eclectic mix of sounds to launch a record label. When Tubular Bells was released, the gamble paid off.
Oldfield is confident he will hit gold again with Tres Lunas and the technology that drives it, Music Virtual Reality. "This is unchartered territory," he says. The music industry is losing young consumers to computer games, so he came up with a solution - combine them. The result may herald a new era in entertainment. "I wasn't going to make an album," Oldfield explains. "I just wanted to make a game. I've put in more than £1million to create it - there was no record company advance."
Nicky Horne, his manager, adds: "The fact that there was no commercial interest helped make this special. Before I was Mike's manager, I interviewed him for Radio 2 and he showed me the game. I found it mesmerising. The music had been written to go with the game, not as an album, so there was freedom that I hadn't heard in his music in years."
At the time, Oldfield was out of contract with Virgin, so Horne became his manager and negotiated a joint deal to release the game and album. "At first record companies didn't understand the concept," says Horne. "Warner Bros in Spain came to Mike's studio, saw the game and, in an instant, understood." Somebody who also understands the value of Tres Lunas and its powerful fusion of two worlds is Oldfield's former boss Richard Branson. "He wanted it," smiles Oldfield mischievously.
Horne confides: "I've never revealed this but we were about to sign on the Monday with Warner. I got a call the Friday night before - it was Branson ringing from his home in Necker Island, parrots squawking in the background. He said, 'I hear you're about to do a deal with Warner - I want to sign you.' I told him what the deal was. He rang me back the next day and said, 'We'll match it'.
"I think because Mike had in effect made Virgin Records, Richard had this vision that he could now transform his current label, V2, into a major success. But we had to tune him down." Was Oldfield tempted to return to Branson for old times' sake? "If I am honest," he says, starting to giggle, "I was never really going to give it to him - I just wanted to wind him up."
He demonstrates the game. "It would take weeks to navigate it all," he smiles, clearly pleased. "I wanted a game without any violence or any of the negative stuff that games pour into children's minds. I just wanted to create something beautiful."
The young Oldfield was ill-prepared for the success of Tubular Bells, seeking refuge from the pressure in alcohol and LSD. Even now, he is agitated by the attention generated by Tres Lunas. "I just wanted to hide," he says of the album's launch party.
There have been various failed relationships - his marriage to Diana Fuller, the leader of a course he took to "confront his fears" in 1978, lasted just a month. He had three children with PR agent Sally Cooper and two with Norweigan singer Anita Hegerland. Now he is happily ensconced in a new Thames-side home with his French girlfriend Fanny Vandekerckhove, 25. "I feel truly contented, both personally and professionally," he says.
Whether his game sells millions or not, he is still an innovator. Expect to find Britney and Kylie dancing under your joystick very soon. |

According to a Spanish article from Los 40, Tres Lunas will be launched in la Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in Valencia, Spain, on June 3. It will include a CD with the music and a second CD with the game. Mike signed a 3 albums contract with Warner Spain.
The translation of the article to english is as follows:
The Spanish audience loves Mike Oldfield, they really do. In fact, Spain is one of the countries in Europe where he sells more records and is most successful. For this reason, Warner Music Spain, the Spanish filial of the multinational label, has made a three record contract with the British multi-instrumentalist and composer. The first one will see the light next 3rd of June and its name will be
"Tres Lunas". The world premiere of this work will be held in the "Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències" ("Art & Science City"), in Valencia.
Mike Oldfield (Reading, England, 15th May 1953) is, from now on, a Spanish artist. The creator of the famous "Tubular Bells" - in its three volumes - and "Moonlight Shadow", among other hits, has always felt a special passion for Spain. Proof of that is that during a long time he lived in Ibiza, an island in which he composed some of his works, as "Voyager" (1996) or "Tubular Bells III" (1998). In any case, even if now has returned back to
his British homeland, he still has that special predilection for our country.
Oldfield comes back into the spotlight again with double news. First, because he has signed a three record contract with
Warner Music Spain, the Spanish filial of the multinational discographic label (so he is now considered as an Spanish artist), which was signed after the original label gave him the possibility to choose freely another label to publish his
works. And second, because next 3rd of June he will publish with his new label his album number 22, the title of which will be "Tres Lunas". The first single will be "To Be Free".

MVR, a musical videogame with several episodes
"Tres Lunas" will include, in addition to the musical themes, a second CD with the first episode (also called "Tres Lunas")
of Music VR (MVR), a musical videogame in which the musician has been working since several years. In the first album there will be a free demo, but to have the full version, you'll have to register online and pay an extra amount - not very high, it seems - to download it from the Internet. MVR will be also downloadable without the need of buying "Tres Lunas".
Mike Oldfield is one of the most prestigious musicians of the UK. His debut was when he was just 17 years old with "Tubular Bells" (1973), and since then, his talent and creative capacity have made him sell more than 40 million records worldwide. Among his biggest hits are works like "Moonlight Shadow", "Family Man", "To France" or "Five Miles Out" among others.

The independent music label Pandora Music is organizing the Second Mike Oldfield Fan Meeting in Madrid which will take place the 23rd of February.
The event will include video sessions, stalls with fanzines (the Orabidoo fanzine staff will come) and rarities (some music shops from Madrid will be represented), discussion forums, a jam session (where everyone is invited to participate), bar service, a rarities raffle (with T-Shirts, CDs...) and several other suprises... The main act of the event will be the Mike Oldfield tribute concert which will be performed by the group Amadian, a well known folk/rock fusion group from Madrid, who will play versions of all of the artist's discography. It will be the first time that a music group does a concert based in versions of a whole 25+ year discography. This is the projected setlist for the concert (the order might change):

Dark Star has the following news to report...
Mike has signed a new 3 record contract with Warner and will be releasing MVR on May 27th. The latest news direct from Mike himself... "I've just signed a new 3 album deal with Warner Music. There will be two chillout albums to coincide with the releases of Music VR, and the re-recording of original Tubular Bells to be released in 2003." The first album will be called 'Tres Lunas', and the first episode of Music VR also called 'Tres Lunas' will be included on the CD. There will be a free demo, but to play the full version of MVR you will have to register online and pay an extra sum by credit card. MVR will also be downloadable separately from the CD release. The release date for both first album and MVR episode is set for May 27 2002.

| Mike and his team have completed all the creative and design aspects of MVR ! With the release date planned for September, attention is now turning to optimisation, increased graphics card compatibility, packaging and distribution. MVR will be released in three parts, which will be available for download from www.musicvr.com. The first part, like the initial demonstration versions will be free. Parts 2 and 3 will be available for purchase at the same time. The price is being finalised at the moment, but is likely to be less than the cost of a CD.

| Just over 25 years since its initial release, Ommadawn will once again be available on vinyl, in the form of a high quality heavy weight vinyl audiophile pressing from Simply Vinyl a specialist in this area. The release will be cut from the original masters, and the original artwork will be re-created. It will available in about 1 months time, priced at £16.99, and available from www.simplyvinyl.com.

| Virgin will be releasing a Best of Tubular Bells album in June, featuring selections from the Virgin and Warner Tubular Bells releases. The idea is to gather together some of the well known extracts and tracks, and to promote this as a mass market, rather than a rarities or fan offering. The track listing is not finalised yet.
